How to Spend a Summer as an Architecture Student
I’m a rising fifth year in the College of Architecture. I’ve done my study abroad, took my summer structures, and have no gen-eds left. What’s a girl to do for a whole summer? (Relaxation is out of the question; need the monies). Well, one option is to work in one of the many summer research positions with the college. I, and fellow students Reid Cimala and Joseph Wessels worked with Professor French to design and fabricate a panel system, presentation drawings, and a model for CoAD’s most recently completed Design-Build-Evaluate Initiative project: A New Norris House. (Fun Fact: It just won a national Top Ten Green Building award! Ballin!) We worked for two and a half months on the presentation that we displayed at the AIA TN Convention on August 14 in Nashville.
Our job was to collaboratively research the many, many projects we presented and form a coherent history of DBEI with a focus on the New Norris House that was both pretty and informative! We also built a, shall I say, AWESOME model that you can now see sitting in our very own main office. Last but not least, we took a hint from the great projects we were poring over and designed and built our own panel system to display the presentation. It travels, it functions as its own storage, it feels good (seriously, go touch it), it’s sexy, and it’s even Green!
The display was featured at the Downtown Studio on this September’s First Friday. If you’re new to Knoxville, First Friday is a monthly fiesta to promote arts in the city. It’s downtown and free for all, even the food and wine. The galleries are in and around Gay Street and Market Square, both of which are a 25-minute walk from campus (follow Clinch to pass the Sunsphere in World’s Fair and take the Pedestrian Bridge) or a FREE Trolley Ride (catch it on the Strip and hop off at the corner of Church and Gay) until 10 PM.
Please forward all questions, concerns, and monetary donations to our office at 424 S Gay Street, Knoxville, TN 37902.
