Alastair Parvin: Architecture for the people by the people
As some of us are finishing up our models and drawings and others of us prepare to present, it’s good to take a break from the projects we have been looking at all semester and broaden our scope of vision.
Alastair Parvin’s brainchild, WikiHouse, veers away from the idea of architecture we’ve come to know. Parvin believes that everyone has the right to build, and he wants to give everyone the ability to do so. With WikiHouse, he has created an open-source form of architecture. Anyone can download and edit construction documents and 3D models and from these produce what he calls “a really big IKEA kit.” Parvin’s ideas challenge the traditional view of the architect and the role of building in our society.
