COFFEE BREAK

Welcome back to another semester and welcome back to COFFEE BREAK. Each week, I will hype up one movie, book, artist, etc. that someone (meaning you) might be interested in checking out next time you sit down for a, dare I say it, coffee break.

Auntie Mame.jpg

"Auntie Mame" is the aunt you dreamed of having. She would buy you the most marvelous presents, never give you a bedtime, and teach you how to make the perfect martini before the age of twelve. Though set in the late 1920s, this film has all the best parts of being made in 1958 (including a suspiciously late fifties wardrobe). Patrick Dennis is sent to live an unconventional life with his fabulous aunt in New York City, and an unlikely yet charming relationship forms. Starring Rosalind Russell, "Auntie Mame" is candy-coated, eccentric fun. It’s based on the play also titled "Auntie Mame." The result is a film that moves and feels like the theater; one can almost imagine the curtains closing after each scene. The play is based on the novel — I bet you can guess the title — by Patrick Dennis who used his own childhood and his own aunt as inspiration. This “irreverent escapade” has been a bestseller, sold out, and a household name.
